"Candidate's Statement for Highlands
| Recreation District"

Quality of Life - The Rec is at the center of our envied quality of life in the Highlands. The Rec’s child care program provides children a safe, fun and structured environment, while the pool and other programs offer great activities for young and old. I believe the Rec is a major reason why families seek to make a home in the Highlands.
The remaining open space land must be preserved. The environment is fragile, which was proven by the Polhemus slide last year. We cannot allow developers to make a profit at the expense of our neighborhood.
Safety – We must be vigilant for safety hazards at the Rec. I propose to perform periodic safety "audits" which would include a review of all property - from the playground to the pool. We cannot allow ourselves to wait until an accident happens – by then it is too late.
Financial/Operating Decisions - Through my financial background, I can translate community assets into dollars and cents. I will ensure that Rec income is utilized efficiently to maintain reasonable dues. Highlands residents should continue to receive first priority for facilities at the lowest possible fees. In addition, I propose to develop a web page allowing for on-line registration and communication with HRC staff.
I have a BS in Accounting and am a North Carolina CPA. I was transferred to the Bay Area in 1992 to serve as Finance Manager for Amtrak. In 1994, I joined SamTrans to provide financial oversight of the Caltrain service. Since joining SamTrans, I have also become involved with the bus operations and the BART service extension into San Mateo County.
I believe I can provide the leadership and creativity necessary to take the HRD into the 21st century. I would appreciate your vote on November 4.
