BARTON, Candidate for Governing Board Member Occupation: Architect and Educator Age: 37 Education and Qualifications: * Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture, UC Berkeley. * Owner of a Palo Alto based architecture firm. * Visiting Scholar at Stanford University. * Assistant Professor, University of California at Berkeley Extension. * Adjunct Professor, San Jose State University and Canada College. Community Service * Chair of the PAUSD Measure B Planning Review Committee. Worked with the communities at each of our 15 schools. * Member of the Hoover School Master Plan Committee. * Volunteer for the Juana Briones New Family Night. * Board member of the Children's Center of the Stanford Community 1993-1996 (president 1994-95, vice-president 1995-96). * Member of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce Government Action Council. * Graduate of Leadership Midpeninsula class of 1997. * Facilitator of the south El Camino Real CPAC design charrette. * Designer and teacher of a public school curriculum on architecture for 4th through 8th grade students. * Participant in Project Playhouse for the Emergency Housing Consortium. * Member of the League of Women Voters As a parent of young children, an architect, teacher, and Palo Alto business owner I bring daily experience in the issues which directly affect our district. These skills, combined with experience as a child care center board president and years of committee work at PAUSD, demonstrate my commitment to families, children and education. I will be an immediately effective Board Member who can: * Lead the completion of the bond program Use 13 years experience with $30 million of public school design to complete the renovation and modernization of our campuses. * Advocate for teachers - Use eight years of teaching experience to push for the variety of tools and training teachers need to work at the highest possible level. * Create innovative and balanced budget approaches - Use seven years of business ownership and the proven experience as the president of a large non-profit. * Facilitate and communicate - Use my facilitation skills and experience on a variety of boards and committees to maintain effective community input and communication. * Support the arts - Enhance the District's support of art, drama and music education. My experience and skills range from an understanding and appreciation of the needs of children preparing to enter school to daily contact with recent high school grads.
